Standing at the edge of Ludlow‚s iconic bridge, The Charlton Arms has certainly got the best views. It‘s also a great place to eat and offers more gourmet dining options for the real foodies out there.
A fantastic selection of wines too.
We strongly recommend, but do make sure to book ahead. It‘s popular, and with good reason.
Ludlow Castle is a partly ruined medieval fortress built in 1066 by Walter de Lacy. It is perfectly situated at Ludlow‘s high point, with a commanding view of the River Teme and the surrounding area.
During the Middle Ages, Ludlow Castle played a significant role as a strategic stronghold for controlling the Welsh Borders and the Welsh Marches. At certain times, it even served as the seat of English government in Wales.
In 1772, the Earls of Powis began renting Ludlow Castle from the Crown, eventually purchasing the ruined structure in 1811. Since then, the castle has been passed down through the Powis family and is currently owned by The Trustees of the Powis Castle Estate on behalf of the family.
Today, Ludlow Castle is open to the public and is considered a Grade I listed building, recognizing its historical and architectural importance. Additionally, it holds the status of a Scheduled Ancient Monument, highlighting its significance as a protected historical site.
Visitors can explore the castle grounds, learn about its rich history, and admire its medieval architecture. Events are also hosted here, and we as a family, have seen many Shakespeare plays performed within the castle grounds. A magical place to experience art.
You can even host your own party or wedding celebration there. A stunning location.
